13.000 cats and dogs euthanized in 2013

More than 13,000 cats and dogs were euthanized in 2013 in this country’s animal shelters, the Sudpresse newspapers reported on Tuesday. The new Walloon minister in charge of animal welfare, Carlo Di Antonio, who has inherited the federal powers, is more than ready to act to stop this happening. He has already announced that he supports the plan to sterilise cats put in place by his predecessors, but he will also launch an information campaign in 2015 to make citizens aware of the responsibilities that come with keeping a pet and what having one entails.
“During 2013, 24,527 dogs (727 more than in 2012) were taken in by 119 animal shelters in this country”, among which 2.474 (16%) had to be euthanized, states Carlo Di Antonio. For cats, “2.315 were taken in by 119 animal shelters, among which 10.575 (36%) had to be euthanized”.
