The staff at the Royal Belgian Football Union (Union royale belge de football, URBFA) headquarters went on strike on Friday. “We demand a meeting with the management immediately”, said Francis Stevens, member of the Flemish branch of the Socialist Employee’s Union (BBTK). Workers assembled in the building’s entrance hall and refused to go back to work. This action follows a recent URBFA decision to let 22 people go. “This was done without anyone being consulted. It had already happened”, said Mr Stevens. “Yesterday 10 people who had been working here for 38 years lost their jobs. It seems staff are paying the price for things that came to light recently, like that the Union paid for hotel rooms during the World Cup in Brazil which were never used”, he added.
“There are not only problems at the Brussels office”, explained Bert Engelaar, ABVV secretary. “Other people will lose their jobs in the regional offices at some point. We also want to meet with the executive committee on Monday to talk about the inhumane manner in which these people had their jobs taken away”.
