Collison between two trains: accident probably due to dead leaves on the rails

According to the preliminary findings of the expert drafted in by the Prosecutor’s Office, dead leaves on the track caused the collision between two trains in Uccle on Monday, on the border with Linkebeek, the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office has said. The track will be free for use as soon as the company that manages the railway infrastructure, Infrabel, has finished the cleaning up. The accident happened around 1.40pm between a service train and a passenger train carrying 41 people on the Brussels-Nivelles line, on the border between the Linkebeek and Uccle communes. The locomotive of the service train went into the back of the passenger train at low speed. The two convoys were going in the same direction, towards Brussels.

The crash slightly injured 16 people.

According to the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office, the drivers of the two vehicles braked but could not stop due to dead leaves on the rails, which made them slippery.

The track the accident happened on was shut again. “Since around 9.30am, one track was shut again and the service between Brussels-Midi and Rhode-Saint-Genèse is only running on the other track”, said the Infrabel spokesperson. The company that manages the rail network added that delays of around 10 minutes are to be expected.

The track will be up and running again when they have been swept. “A cleaning train must pass over the track which will not open until early afternoon”, added the spokesperson.
