One canteen in three does not meet hygiene standards

More than one school canteen in three does not meet hygiene requirements, according to a report by the Federal Food Security Agency (Agence Fédéral de la sécurité de la chaîne alimentaire (Afsca) that Sudpresse mentions in its different newspapers. The Agency tested more than 4,700 collective kitchens, which includes school canteens, care homes, hospitals, and prisons. The latter has the worst conformity rate (23%). Schools do better (63%) but are far behind nurseries (85%), crèches (75%), care homes (70%) and hospitals (69%).

The data is stable between 2011 and 2013, Afsca notes. There are mainly problems with cleanliness, bad staff hygiene, non-respect of procedures for hot and cold food, and rotten or badly stored food.

If a serious problem is found, it could mean the closure of the establishment.
