Police have said they are very worried about the attitude of Antwerp port Dockers during the next demonstration, which will take place in the Flemish metropolis on the 24th of November, the De Morgen and the Het Laatste Nieuws reported on Monday. According to internal sources, one of the Unions is worried about acts of violence from some of their members, who happen to be Dockers, say the newspapers.
These same sources say they have heard rumours about a “tough nut” who wants to return to the “old way” of demonstrating to finally “be heard”. The name “Zwartberg”, where two people lost their lives in 1966 during violent demonstrations against mine closures, has been mentioned.
“We have received warnings that masked port workers armed with homemade weapons will look for confrontation”, says Michel Goyvaerts, from the police union SNPS. He asks that the Antwerp police receive back-up from other units as soon as this happens, and an urgent meeting with Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA).
