The Constitution needs to be revised to change the name of the province (governor of Antwerp)

The province of Antwerp cannot change its name until after the legislative elections in 2019, seeing as this would involve changing the Constitution. In fact, the article concerned, article 5, is not on the list of those adopted at the end of legislature passed, the governor of Antwerp, Cathy Berx (CD&V) noted. The permanent deputies of the province have expressed their displeasure at the proposition by three CDd&V Open Vld and N-VA MPs. The idea is not new, she points out, but is not a priority. “Contrary to the three MPs, the province is much too busy trying to provide a quality service. It’s necessary after the abrupt budget cut for the province (11 million a year) imposed by the Flemish government”, she said. The majority parties in the Flemish region want to rename the Antwerp province “Midden-Brabant”. According to them, this is a logical new name, seeing as Antwerp and Gand can afford to not be in the province as they are large towns, conform to the Flemish governmental accord.
