Sharia4Belgium – Trial postponed to 26 November due to the strike
Sunday, 16 November 2014
The trial against the Islamist group Sharia4Belgium which was accused of terrorism, has been postponed due to the anti austerity strikes that are set to take place in the Antwerp province. “The president of the Antwerp tribunal has decided to postpone the trial for two days. He doesn’t want to take any security risks”, affirmed the spokesperson of the Antwerp tribunal, Fabienne Nackaerts. All the lawyers and other participants in the trial have been informed.
The defense will have the possibility to give its final words on 26 November when they will have to face and answer to the plaintiff and the public ministry. The case will then be finalized and the judgment will be delivered at a later date, yet to be determined.
46 defendants are charged of having directed or been involved in activities in a terrorist organization. The public ministry has requested the maximum penalty of 15 years in prison for some of the members of the group. Only 9 persons of the 46 actually appeared in the trial. The rest have either left to Syria or passed away meanwhile.
