The suspect in the 1981 Antwerp attack in prison in France

One of the suspects in the fatal attack on the Antwerp diamond quarter in 1981, Hassan Diab, has been in prison in France since this weekend. He was handed to France by Canada, the Het Nieuwsblad, the Gazet van Antwerpen and De Standaard reported on Monday. The 60 year old is also suspected of an attack on a Paris synagogue in 1980.

The Antwerp Federal Prosecutor’s Office will decide on Monday whether to send investigators to Paris to question the suspect. It is likely he will deny involvement, as the Antwerp attack is beyond the limitation period.

The investigation cannot be re-opened unless the limitation period increases to 40 years.
