The Jewish community is still waiting for someone to act for its security

The security of the Jewish community was at the center of several meetings with the Home Affairs minister at the time, Joëlle Milquet, after the fatal attack on the Belgian Jewish museum on the 24th of May. But there has been no real progress since, said the president of the Committee for the Coordination of Belgian Jewish organizations (CCOJB), Maurice Sosnowski, in an interview with La Libre Belgique on Tuesday. “What worries me is that the authorities are not reacting to everything that is happening in our society. Direct attacks on the Jewish community get no reaction from them, whether it is physical acts, verbal or psychological, etc… I would like to see concrete, firm actions. I expect real measure to be taken. Strong acts and not empty words”, says Maurice Sosnowski.

The president of the CCOJB confirms he has given the current Prime Minister “a request for financial help following estimations of costs for measures needed to protect around a hundred public Jewish edifices: synagogues, cultural centers, schools, etc. We will see what happens to my request”, he says, adding that a budget is allocated in France and every year there is financing for the security of French Jewish institutions, while in Belgium “we have nothing”.
