Over the past few days, a number of alarmist messages have spread via social networks with regards to possible attempted abductions of minors in Auderghem. These rumours are unsubstantiated, said the Uccle/Watermael-Boitsfort/Auderghem police precinct spokesman on Thursday, after an investigation. Three separate incidents occurred between October 21st and November 4th and were reported to the police who immediately increased patrols around schools and opened an investigation.
During this investigation, each victim involved made a statement. It transpired that there were no hard facts to back up the theory of a kidnapping attempt. The rumour was initiated when a woman merely took hold of a lone seven-year-old child’s hand to help him cross the street to school. The child’s comments were misinterpreted and this led to the actual facts being distorted.
The police precinct and the municipal authorities are eager to reassure the school, parents and children that the rumours are unsubstantiated.
