Philippe and Mathilda will see the pope in December

King Philippe and his wife Queen Mathilda will see the pope on the 12th of December. They will visit pope François at the Vatican for the first time, a Vatican spokesman has said. The Palace's spokesman confirmed it, without giving any more details. The last time the Belgian monarchy visited the Vatican was October 2009. Albert II and Paola visited Benoît XVI.
Although he is a practicing catholic, King Albert II signed a law decriminalizing euthanasia during his reign. He also signed a law authorizing gay marriage.

Philippe, a catholic from the Community of Emmanuel, seems to have the same attitude as his father. They are both respectful of the Belgian constitution and its limits. He signed a controversial law in 2014 extending euthanasia to children.
