Rent will not go up next year

Good news for renters: due to low inflation, most rents will stay the same next year, several newspapers reported on Wednesday. Average inflation was at 0.34% this year, its lowest level since2009, according to official figures. Rents are fixed once a year on the rental contract renewal date, according to the evolution in prices. But in 2015, inflation is expected to fall by 0.01%, which means rents will not change.

When inflation is negative, the renter can ask for a reduction in rent via an official letter, as is written in the law. But the reduction would be tiny, says L’Echo. In cases like this, both parties generally decide not to make any changes, and wait until the following year to adapt the rental agreement.
