During this year's BOB campaign, there have been fewer positive results for drink driving than there were last year in the same period, in spite of an increased number of checks being carried out, favourable results after the first 4 weeks of the campaign. On Tuesday, the Belgian Institute for Road Safety (IBSR) and the police called the figures "encouraging". It will not, however, be until the end of the campaign at the end of January that definitive figures will be revealed.
Teams of local and federal police tested 146,634 drivers, compared to 138,230 last year. In total, 3,368 people tested positive for alcohol, i.e. 3%, down from last year's result (3.4%), the first BOB campaign year. There were 6% more checks carried out this year.
The IBSR also highlighted that two thirds of the drivers who tested positive for alcohol had a blood alcohol content (BAC) higher than, or equal to, 0.8 g, showing that the drivers under the influence of alcohol tended to be well over the limit, pointed out the IBSR.
