With an average temperature of 11.9°C, 2014 was the warmest year in Belgium since meteorological records began in 1833. The previous record (average temperature of 11.6°C) was from 2011, said the IRM meteorologist David Dehenauw. The new record was reached outside of a heat wave.

2014 was also very dry. 784.3mm of rain fell in Uccle, compared to 852mm in “normal weather”. The sun shone for 1,634 hours, and 1,843 hours on the coast, compared to 1,545 hours in normal weather.

The highest temperature was recorded on the 19th of July in Kleine Brogel: the thermometer read 34.5°C. On the 29th of December, it was -10.6°C in Elsenborn and Buzenol, the lowest temperature recorded.

Other than 2014 and 2011, the five other warmest years were, respectively: 2007 (11.5°C), 2006 (11.4°C), 1989 (11.3°C) and 2002 and 1990 (11.2°C).
