Brussels Flemish-speaking schools - registration open

Brussels Flemish-speaking schools - registration open

From January 5th, parents can enrol their child online at inschrijveninbrussel.be to get a place in a Flemish-speaking school in Brussels for the 2015-2016 school year. Registration is open until January 30th. The system does not work on a first-come-first-served basis.

Monday is the first day of registration for Flemish-speaking schools in Brussels, both at primary and at secondary level. Pupils who already have a brother or a sister enrolled in one of these schools get priority, as do offspring of school employees.

In primary schools, 55% of places are reserved for children who have at least one Flemish-speaking parent. Lastly, 35% of places are reserved for children who come under the GOK decree (gelijke onderwijskansen, a system guaranteeing equal opportunity in education) hailing from low-income families or with uneducated parents.

In secondary schools, a new registration procedure is in place this year. The only change is to do with the automatic registration of special needs children.

The registration period open on Monday does not apply to immersion schools run by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

For the 2014-2015 school year, 1,291 parents were unable to secure a place in a Flemish-speaking school in the capital, mostly at primary school level. According to a September 2014 census, the number of pupils in Flemish-speaking schools in Brussels rose from 1,228 to 42,129. A large increase in enrolment at secondary level is expected within 4 to 5 years
