Attacks against police – concern in Belgium

Belgian police officers are concerned after a rumour saying the IS (Islamic State) had called for killings of Belgian police officers and their families started circulating on social media. Their concerns were reported in La Dernière Heure and Het Laaste Nieuws on Monday. “The message has been confirmed by the terrorism section of the Belgian police force”, according to information released by the Walloon and Flemish police forces. “This is so that everyone is aware and can be on their guard”.

Neither the federal police nor the Interior SPF (Federal Public Services) said they were aware of the threat. Nevertheless, numerous police officers decided to delete their social media profiles on Sunday, and others removed statuses and photos to make their profiles more anonymous.

Antwerp police have also said they were not aware of a call to arms against police. “But after the events in Paris, it’s perfectly normal for police to realize they are still a potential target. We advise our men to be careful with what they put online”.
