Terrorist threat - 11 raids in Maaseik

On Friday morning, an ongoing investigation by the Federal Prosecutor’s office led to raids on 11 homes in Maaseik (Limburg). Alderman Jan Cremers confirmed that one arrest was made. No weapons or munitions were found. The suspect was to go before the investigating judge on Friday.

To date, four Maaseik inhabitants have gone to fight in Syria. According to the alderman, the current investigation is part of another one into certain inhabitants of the town who were convicted for their involvement in the Madrid bombings in 2004.

The Federal Prosecutor’s office points out that these raids are not connected with the Verviers cell or with the Paris attacks.
