Man who threatened VRT with attacks consigned to mental hospital

This Wednesday the Council Chamber of Termonde institutionalised the suspect who threatened VRT (Flemish radio and television) and other Brussels-based organisations with attacks. The 24-year-old Dutchman was arrested in November 2013 in Sint-Niklaas (East Flanders). He was found in a café, attempting to recruit people to launch attacks on the day of King’s Feast (Fête du Roi).

“We have serious reason to believe that this man was planning an attack on VRT and other organisations in Brussels,” said the Public Prosecutor’s office at the time, adding that the suspect had a manifesto referring to the overthrow of the Belgian state. The young man wanted to make his message heard via VRT, by force if necessary, added the public prosecutor.

The suspect was committed to the Bruges prison psychiatric ward before being assessed by a group of psychiatrists. The Council Chamber in Termonde ordered he be committed on Wednesday.
