Notice of industrial action and strike at Orpea rest and nursing homes

Unions joined together to give advance notice of industrial action and an indefinite strike at Orpea group rest homes and nursing homes, they announced on Friday. “If we hear nothing from the conciliation board in the coming fortnight, industrial action and strikes may be launched,” warned unions in a press release. The common front feels management is “insulting residents and employees” by refusing to create 20 new jobs even though they are subsidised by the Belgian government.

“Employers and employees initially agreed on the need for these new posts. They would have meant a more comfortable life for the elderly, but management still backed out at the last minute,” deplore the unions.

Denouncing appalling working conditions and lack of appreciation from management, unions tabled a list of demands regarding purchasing power, working time, workload, and “basically, some acknowledgment from management.”

Orpea runs a total of 6,765 beds across a total of 58 homes in Belgium.
