Two cases against police officers for abuse of social media

Two disciplinary cases against police officers for non-respect of their duty to be responsible on social media, notably Facebook, are being looked at by the authorities. The Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon (New Flemish Alliance) told the Sunday edition of La Dernière Heure that the cases were opened in 2012 and 2014, and disciplinary measures have been applied (a reprimand or a salary cut). A thorough investigation into police officers using social media to publish inappropriate comments is underway, and will look at all federal and local services, the paper said. It is being done by the Police Disciplinary Council.

Jan Jambon doesn’t think it is necessary to revise the police conduct code, which dates from 2006 and doesn’t deal with the problem of social media specifically.
