The tax authorities investigate Belgium’s richest family

The Bruges Special Income Inspection unit (SII) has opened an investigation into the Spoelberch family, the richest family in Belgium. The Spoelberch family’s total fortune is estimated at more than 17 billion euros, L’Echo reported on Friday. Along with the Van Damme and Mévius families, the Spoelberchs own 29% of the AB InBev beer, the equivalent of 35 billion euros. Due to LuxLeaks and SwissLeaks, various fiscal constructions have come to light, in which members of the Spoelberch family are implicated.

On Thursday, the Finance minister Johan Van Overtveldt observed that most of the people named by SwissLeaks were already under investigation.
