Queen Matilda was using crutches and had a knee brace on her left knee when the royal couple visited European institutions on Wednesday morning. The palace gave no details on the fall which resulted in damage to her left knee, which will need a brace for several weeks.
The queen let go of her crutches for the official portrait with Martin Schultz, president of the European Parliament, as she leant on her husband, King Philip.
The royal couple then met with presidents of the groups in the European Parliament before visiting European Commission authorities later. The king and queen will end their tour of European institutions at the European Council on Wednesday afternoon.
