Belgium has 671 prevention partnerships

Belgium currently has 671 local prevention partnerships (LPP), most of which are in Flanders. It had 565 in January 2015, according to the Home Affairs minister Jan Jambon’s (New Flemish Alliance) reply to a question in parliament. La Libre Belgique reported on it on Monday. These partnerships are slowly spreading to Wallonia. The LPP formula is simple: citizens within a neighbourhood work together with police to spot and report signs of attempted burglaries or other suspicious behaviour.

These partnerships started in Flanders. As they were successful, they spread from one town to another. “Flanders has always been security conscious. In the French-speaking part of the country, it has long been seen as informing”, said the Director General of the Security and Prevention department of the Home Affairs SPF.

The Antwerp and Eastern Flanders provinces have respectively 329 and 201 LLPs in place.
