One job in five in Wallonia is public

Out of 1,227,000 jobs in Wallonia, the number of public positions went up to 258,000 at the end of 2012. This is according to Iweps, the Walloon Institute for of evaluation, perspective and statistics. They performed a study to create a profile of officials in Walloon administration, which L’Echo relayed on Wednesday. One employee in five (21.2%) in Wallonia works in public administration. This makes the South of the country the Belgian champion of public employment, as the Belgian average in 18.5%.

Most of them (130,600) are at local level. Regional public employment remains relatively modest, with 17,500 officials.
