Mummy head stolen from Cinquantenaire Museum

Mummy head stolen from Cinquantenaire Museum

A curator from the MRAH (Royal museums of art and history) noticed that the head of a mummy listed on the inventory of state museum collections had been stolen last week. The investigation already revealed a suspect, according to a source from Belga press agency. The Cinquantenaire Museum confirms the theft but gives no further details in order not to prejudice the investigation. The Egyptian department of the MRAH owns tombs, statues of gods, hieroglyphs, as well as mummies. In a press release on Thursday, the institution confirms that a curator noticed the theft of an artefact kept in storage at the Cinquantenaire Museum. An official complaint was filed with the Brussels police, and a criminal investigation was opened by the public prosecutor in Brussels.

An internal investigation within the museum administration is also taking place, led by MRAH services with support from the federal science policy office (Belspo), to determine the circumstances of the theft as quickly as possible and to take the appropriate measures. “In order to ensure the smooth conduct of these investigations, the MRAH will abstain from any comment until the matter is resolved,” announced the museum.
