“Garnet’s Gold” gets the prize for best international documentary at Docville

The film “Garnet’s Gold” by Ed Perkins received the prize for best documentary on Saturday evening, during the documentary film festival Docville in Louvain. The “Weten&Geweten” prize was given to the Danish film “Democrats”, by Camilla Nielsson. The prize for best Belgian documentary went to Sylvain Biegeleisen for “Twilight of Life”. The prize for best TV documentary went to Lode Desmet for “De Werkende Mens”. “Garnet’s Gold” tells the story of an eccentric man who goes to the Scottish Highlands to look for treasure. He found a wooden sceptre in the Scottish countryside around 20 years ago, and is convinced it means there is a secret treasure hidden somewhere in the area.

The documentary “Democrats”, which won the “Weten&Geweten” category, takes the viewer into the world of Zimbabwe and Mugabe. It follows two government representatives, of differing opinions, as a new constitution is prepared.

The best Belgian documentary, “Twilight of Life”, is a film full of joy, hope and tenderness. The director tells the story of his 94 year old mother’s last weeks.
