Delhaize-Ahold merger: the companies confirm "preliminary discussions”

The Delhaize group and the Dutch supermarket chain Royal Ahold NV, parent company to Albert Heijn, confirmed they had entered “preliminary discussions” on Tuesday. They are looking into the possibility of a structural merger between the two companies. “These discussions may or may not result in a future transaction”, the Delhaize group said in a press release. The group said it will communicate “all eventual important information, as per the rules”.

The discussions about a possible merger between the two groups were mentioned in Saturday’s L’Echo. The two distribution companies had already tried a merger in 2006-2007, but the discussions didn’t go anywhere.
