Alfred Gadenne, Mouscron alderman, would like to clarify that the project aiming to reserve a stretch of land bordering Mouscron to travellers is a purely French project designed by Wattrelos authorities on the French side. According to the plans submitted, French local authorities aim to build a wall. The belgian town of Mouscron has no role in this project which will be implemented solely on French territory,” reveals the press department of the Hurlus town. Contrary to allegations by Wattrelos authorities, Mouscron never asked for a wall to be built between the travellers’ halting site and the village of Herseaux. “This is a French project, and French authorities are lying when they say that the Mouscron alderman requested it,” protested Alfred Gadenne.
Wattrelos authorities plan to modernise a halting site along Boulevard Pierre Mauroy to meet regulations deriving from the Besson law, in particular when it comes to sanitary facilities. There are currently 13 families living permanently at a camp site in Wattrelos, and according to the Vesta group which manages the facilities, the site is problem-free. Alfred Gadenne will answer questions from the Green and Socialist opposition parties at the town council meeting on Monday evening.
News of a wall being built is upsetting people in the Hurlus town, especially on social media. A Socialist councillor even asked the question: “how tall should a wall be to avoid human stupidity?”
