Moroccan work trip for police officers from Brussels, Antwerp and Verviers

As part of the bilateral police cooperation between Morocco and Belgium launched several years ago, a delegation of policemen from Brussels-Capital-Ixelles, Antwerp, Vima (Vilvoorde – Machelen), and Vesdre (Verviers-Dison-Pepinster) travelled to Rabat mid-May. The meeting focused on radicalism, pointed out their spokespersons on Wednesday. Bilateral police cooperation between Morocco and Belgium was recently stepped up in the field of radicalism, a challenging issue which equally affects both countries. For the first time, there was talk of re-assessing efforts at local police unit level in both countries.

“Everyone agreed the answer to radicalism is a multidisciplinary approach, and not purely a police intervention. Social services and other grassroots players also have an important contribution to make,” pointed out police chief Amrani, deputy head of Brussels-Capital-Ixelles police interventions directorate.

“This initial meeting revealed similarities in the challenges we face, and led to exchanges in the field of good practices, with a special focus on local approaches. A timetable was established to encourage extra collaboration in coming months,” he added.
