The tax department is going after student ‘kots”

The tax administration has sent Belgian Universities and Ecoles Supérieures requests for information on owners of student “kots”, which are generally furnished rooms. The tax department has identified them as a “tax risk”, La Libre Belgique reported on Wednesday. The tax department has been looking into the manner in which owners declare this income. If they rent furnished rooms and only pay property tax, there is a problem.

In fact, according to tax department employee Emmanuel Degrève (Deg&Partners), “this type of contract involves two elements: property and furniture. Therefore, there needs to be a double declaration.”

At the same time, even if it was not the original aim, the tax department is creating a database that will help them with another problem: false addresses.
