The Belgian Protestant church opens its doors to homosexual priests

The Belgian Protestant church has opened its doors to homosexual priests, it revealed on Sunday. “The Belgian Protestant Church Union decided, during its assembly on Saturday, that being homosexual would no longer be an obstacle to becoming a priest”, it said in a press release.

According to the press release, the work group where each district of the church is represented, called for a Protestant Union special assembly to discuss “Homosexuality and priesthood”. The work group drew up a recommendation, which was sent to all local churches so they could discuss it. It then became a topic of discussion at regional level, before finally being voted on at national level.

“I am proud of my church, as well as the open-mindedness and respect shown during the debate”, said the President of the Union, Steven H. Fuite.

A few years ago, the Protestant Union, 15% of whose priests are women, decided that, it is also possible to ask for a religious blessing for a same sex couple marriage.
