There was a car chase through Courtrai and Mouscron on Tuesday afternoon. A French national born in 1992 was being watched by federal judicial police and Posa (Peloton for protection, observation, support and arrests) officers. He was shot during a gun battle. A source has said that the chase started in Aalbeke, in the Courtrai commune (Eastern Flanders). At the end of the chase, there was a gun battle on the rue de la Royenne, near the former Louis de Poortere factories in Mouscron. During the firefight, the suspect was shot dead. Two police officers were also wounded.
The Courtrai Prosecutor’s office will handle the case. The Tournai Prosecutor’s office has not said why the suspect was being watched.
