100,000 2.5-euro coins minted on the occasion of the Waterloo bicentenary have all been sold, revealed a spokesperson for the Finance minister to Belga press agency on Wednesday. For once, half the coins were sold abroad: in the United States, Japan, England, and France, he added. The 2.5-euro commemorative coin is made of brass, and it is the first Belgian coin with this nominal value. It represents the Lion’s Mound on one side and a map of the French and Allied positions during the battle, on the other.
Belgium originally hoped to mint a 2-euro coin for the commemoration, which would have been used throughout the Euro-zone. France, however is clearly still not happy with Napoleon’s defeat 200 years ago, and rejected the suggestion.
The commemorative coin will not be re-issued, in spite of its success.
