A lot of drivers received fines after they used their mobile phones to take photos of an accident involving a truck on the E40, near Erpe-Mere. The offenders could get a 110 euro fine, says the head of the Eastern Flanders traffic police. There are no definitive figures, but traffic police estimate that around a hundred drivers received fines.
“This measure is designed to protect drivers from themselves”, explains the chief of police. “Some even took their hands off their steering wheel to film the accident. We can give them a fine for breaking two rules. Using a mobile phone while driving is banned, and they must remain in control of their vehicle. Offenders could get a 110 euro fine”.
