14 unregistered immigrants found in a trafficker’s car after an accident in Furnes

A 29 year old Iranian human trafficker was arrested in Furnes following a car chase on the E40, the spokesman for the Eastern Flanders Prosecutor’s office has said. 14 unregistered immigrants were inside his vehicle. The man will appear before an investigating judge on Tuesday evening. Thirty agents were called in to survey the Furnes industrial estate from late Monday to early Tuesday. They spotted a car that seemed unusually interested in parked trucks. When police tried to talk to the driver, he fled.

The car chase ended when the trafficker presumably lost control of the vehicle when he was driving the wrong way down the E40. The driver tried to flee on foot, but was caught when he jumped into a canal. Officers found no less than 14 people in the suspect’s Citroën Berlingo.

Car parks along the E40 have been a human trafficker’s playground for a long time. That’s where they try to pick up immigrants who have come from Calais in France, usually on board trucks going to England.
