The Flemish company IS changes its name to avoid having the same acronym as the terrorist group

The Flemish company IS, an abbreviation of Innovation Studio, specialised in new technologies, has decided to change its name. This is to avoid having the same acronym has the Islamic State organisation, which is known as IS for “Islamtische Staat” in Dutch. The company, based in Genk, is now called Mitch&Mates, it revealed on Tuesday. The company specialises in IT systems for hospitals. It has a good reputation in its sector, but has suffered due to the “negative connotations” of its name since the Islamic State has become a major threat.

“By calling ourselves Mitch&Mates, we have chosen a name that suits our company’s philosophy better”, its founders say. “Mitch refers to ‘Matching IT in Healthcare’, and Mates to our shareholders”, they say.

At the same time as changing its name, Mitch&Mates has become an anonymous company and has increased its capital.
