There have been nearly 12,000 same sex marriages in Belgium since it was made legal in June 2003, l’Avenir said on Thursday. It based these figures on data published by the Economy SPF.
Same sex marriage is far from just a short-term trend: there were around 1,000 marriages a year between 2004 and 2014. There were more marriages in Brussels and Flanders than in Wallonia.
23.81% of male only couples that got married have divorced since 2004. The divorce figure for same sex female couples is higher, 34.04%.
