Legal proceedings against Ghent police officer who made racist comments

A local Ghent policeman is currently the subject of judicial and disciplinary inquiries, in the wake of several extremely racist comments he posted on Facebook, has indicated the East Flanders Public Prosecutor. The 56-year–old policeman posted, on his Facebook timeline, a photo in which blacks are attacking an American police vehicle, comparing the image to another where baboons are jumping on a car, noted the De Gentenaar newspaper. The post also included the comment “Monkeys can still learn something, unlike these jungle blacks.”

His profile also displays a phot of a Syrian refugee, under which the policeman has commented, “On his way to all-inclusive holiday in the Netherlands and Belgium. And guess who’s paying?”

“It is simply unacceptable and goes against the impartiality values which should prevail in the police,” commented Chief of Police Filip Rasschaert.

The policeman risks several sanctions, but has not as yet been suspended, although a report has been written. The judicial inquiry is underway and the disciplinary procedure could also lead to steps being taken by the Alderman. The policeman will also be reviewed “to assess his ongoing suitability for his role”.
