Liège fire: suspect released

The suspect arrested early on Sunday, after a fire in an apartment building in the Liège neighbourhood of Outremeuse was started deliberately, has been released. The Prosecutor’s office announced the news late on Sunday afternoon.

The intercommunal Liège fire department was called out to a fire in an apartment building in rue de la Province a little after 5am. When they arrived, there was smoke billowing out the first and second floors. The fire, which was on the first floor, was quickly put out. No-one was injured. It was clearly started deliberately.

A suspect was arrested soon after. “This individual was involved in a fight in a café, and he threatened to take revenge”, the Prosecutor’s office said. A little later, an apartment building near the café was set on fire. The suspect denies the charges. Police searched his house and car, but found no evidence to link him to the fire. He was released due to lack of evidence.
