SNCB: fines for fare-dodging brought in 5 million euros in 2014

SNCB (Belgian Rail) issued over 531,000 fines to offending clients in 2014. The fines levied allowed it to recoup approximately 5 million euros, according to the daily L’Echo, based on the rail operator’s customer report.

Almost 9,000 fines (C170) were given to travellers in first class who had no ticket or only a second-class ticket, and over 522,000 other C170 fines were given to users caught travelling in second class (without a ticket or with a pass which was not valid) last year.

A traveller without a valid ticket can purchase a ticket at the time which will be subject to a 12.5-euros surcharge, or accept to pay within 15 days (purchase price of the ticket plus a 60-euro fine).
