Incident at Doel: there was a brief drop in tension in the electricity network, says Elia

There was a brief drop in tension in the electricity network on Saturday, at the same time as the explosion and fire at a transformer in the Doel 1 plant. This was announced by Elia, the manager of the high tension electricity transport network.

This drop in tension was felt locally, in the North of the country. “It is possible that people noticed it at home. Light bulbs may have briefly flickered”, Elia explained on Sunday.

At the moment, the incident at Doel has had no impact on the network. They assured people there is still a secure supply. The Doel 1 transformer, where there was an explosion and a fire on Saturday evening, sends electricity produced by the eponymous reactor.

As this reactor is currently not operating, no current is being sent. The transformer is still connected, so it can take electricity from the network. Electrabel, which manages the plant, says it doesn’t know what the link between the fire and the drop in tension is.
