Fouad Belkacem isolated from other inmates

Fouad Belkacem, former leader of the Islamist organisation Sharia4Belgium, is not allowed to have contacts with his inmates from the Antwerp prison. The Prison Service fears that other inmates will radicalise following interactions with him, wrote the newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen on Monday.

This special security put in place for Fouad Belkacem is an indirect consequence of the Paris attacks that happened on Friday November 13. The Prison Service has asked the Antwerp prison to isolate Belkacem completely from other inmates. The current atmosphere could potentially incite some Muslim inmates to radicalize, in which case the influence of the former leader of Sharia4Belgium could be particularly harmful.

"Fouad Belkacem is not allowed to pray together with other inmates, go for a walk or even go out”, reveals his lawyer Nabil Riffi to the Flemish newspaper. "He is still allowed to receive prison visits, but only behind a window pane." His lawyer is currently looking into contesting this decision.
