In one year, 5,000 newborns received a double family name

In just one year, between the 1st of June 2014 and the 31st of May 2015, “double names were given to 5,074 children when they were born, out of a total of 106,380 Belgian births”, the Justice minister Koen Geens (Christian democrats) said. It was in response to a parliamentary question, the Libre Belgique reported on Saturday.

At least one newborn in twenty (4.8%) has a name made up of their father’s name and their mother’s name.

The new law, voted in by the previous legislation, came in on the 8th of May 2014. It only applies to children born from the 1st of June 2014.
