University of Liège to start registration of social aids granted to migrants by their country of origin

The Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM) of the University of Liège (ULg) is going to lead a 5-year research in order to establish the first ever European register of social aids granted to migrants by their country of origin, indicated the ULg in a statement on Friday. Jean-Michel Lafleur, deputy director of CEDEM and also a qualified researcher for the Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS, Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique) - will lead an international team. The project received an "ERC Starting Grant" of 1.5 million euros and aims to examine the public policies of 28 European states and 10 non-European states.

"We will try to highlight what these states do for their nationals abroad, in the current context of economic crisis and intensified migratory flows", says Lafleur. "Let us hope that the results of this research will encourage reflection on the future of social security, in a world where individuals increasingly move."
