Plastic bags to be banned in Wallonia as of 2016

The use of plastic bags is expected to be prohibited as of 2016 in the Wallonian region in Belgium. The project was inititiated earlier this year by the Wallonian Environment Minister Carlo Di Antonio and was reviewed by the Wallonian Parliament last week, La Dernière Heure wrote on Saturday.

At a first stage, the rule will be applied to plastic bags in the cashier areas in supermarkets. And in 2017, it will be extended to other usage areas such as sales of fruits and vegetables.

The law still needs to go through a final vote in the Wallonian Parliament. However, Di Antonio's office has indicated that they are optimistic it will pass.
