Eldest Belgian to celebrate 111th birthday on Friday

The oldest person in Belgium, Alicia Van den Berghe-Corveleyn, will celebrate her 111th birthday on Friday. The Ostend resident lives in a nursing home in the city where she was born on January 8th, 1905. She left for the U.K. during World War One, but eventually came back to Belgium.

This is the first time that Alicia Van den Berghe-Corveleyn Van den Berghe-Corveleyn has celebrated a birthday as the oldest Belgian, a title she inherited in April 2015 after Ghent resident Anna De Guchtenaere died.

Although she is the oldest Belgian resident, Alicia Van den Berghe-Corveleyn is not the oldest living Belgian citizen. Maria Anne de Sousberghe, who lives close to London, is in fact two months older, and celebrated her 111th birthday on November 7th.

Joanna Catharina Deroover, who died on December 6th, 2002 at the age of 112 years and 186 days, remains the oldest Belgian ever.
