Around 92,140 babies born in Belgium between the 1st January and 31st of December 2015 were given their father’s surname. 4,097 got their mother’s surname. 4,276 were given their father’s then mother’s surname and 718 have their mother’s then father’s surnames. This is according to the latest figures from the National Birth Register (Home Affairs SPF).
Since the 1st of June 2014, new parents can give their children the father’s surname, the mother’s surname or a combination of the two. If the parents can’t decide or refuse to, in general the baby automatically gets the father’s surname.
