Around 450 couples, all dressed up smart, renewed their vows in celebratory fashion at the end of Saturday afternoon, in a ceremony on Antwerp’s Grand Place. There was a giant wedding ceremony, held to mark the end of the local town hall’s 450th anniversary year.

The ceremony attracted a lot of interest, as the 450 couples required registered in three days. “It really pleased me that so many people wanted to celebrate this anniversary year with us. The large amount of quick responses show that faith in love, during good and bad days, still exists”, said master of ceremony Bart De Wever.

The couples assembled on Antwerp’s Grand Place, where there was also a giant wedding cake. When the mayor asked whether they wanted to renew their vows, they all replied “yes”, before sharing a kiss.

The ceremony ended with the song “Les Lacs du Connemara” by Michel Sardou. During the song, the couples waved white handkerchiefs in the air. They were then given a drink, and were able to immortalise the moment with a professional photographer.

Among the couples present, around 30 were not Belgian, and others were homosexual. Some got married in 2015, while others have been married for 65 years. They got flowers and a present hamper. Three couples got a present after winning a tombola.

After the festivities, there was a ball on the Grand Place.
