Directors at the Walloon Waste disposal office cover up an illegal dump

Two directors at the Walloon waste disposal office have opposed their own administration’s decision to cover up an illegal dump of chrome VI polluted sand in Sambreville, L’Avenir reported on Saturday.

Avenir said 35,000 tons of potentially toxic foundry sand has been illegally dumped on the side of the Sambre, between Sambreville and Fleurus. This sand is from foundries in Magotteaux, in Vaux-sous-Chèvrement.

A branch of Wanty (Binche) was asked to take it to a treatment works, but it ended up at the side of the Sambre. Tests requested by the Charleroi Prosecutor’s office showed the sand contained chemical smelters, notably chrome VI.

Confronted with this, the Walloon administration imposed waste disposal taxes on Wanty, amounting to 2.5 million euros. This has still not been paid. Following an appeal by the company, the Walloon environment minister Carlo Di Antoni asked if it was possible to postpone the payment of 2.5 million euros.
