Faulty parts made by the Creusot forge could have been used in the Doel and Tihange reactors, L’Echo and De Tijd reported on Saturday. The Federal Nuclear Control Agency (AFCN) will request more information from Areva. It will also ask Electrabel to do a thorough investigation.
Greenpeace expressed its concern about the presence of these parts in a letter to the Federal Nuclear Control Agency. The possible faulty parts were made by Le Creusot, which was taken over by Areva, after 1965.
Over the last few years, Areva delivered sensitive parts made from Le Creusot steel to the Belgian plants.
“Belgium may be at risk, but we don’t have much information yet”, said Nele Scheerlinck, the spokesperson for the AFCN. The AFCN will request more information from Areva, and ask Electrabel to do a thorough investigation.
The French Nuclear Security Agency has also told Areva to do a full audit of Creusot.
